Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to prevent galvanic corrosion on submerged metal parts of Hamilton water jet thrusters and systems. This anode acts as the preferred electrode in the galvanic pair, consuming itself to protect structural parts of the propeller such as pump bodies, impellers and shafts, which are considerably more expensive to repair or replace. Galvanic corrosion is especially aggressive in nautical installations where different metals coexist in contact with sea or brackish water, and an anode in poor condition leaves these components exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the propulsion assembly.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its initial volume, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season, ideally at each docking, and replace them preventively at the beginning of each season if they show noticeable wear or if the boat remains in the water for prolonged periods. Replacing the anode on time is a minimal investment compared to the cost of repairing or replacing the impeller, shaft or body of the Hamilton impeller damaged by corrosion.
