Its function is to act as an active anode, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect the most valuable metal parts of the engine - crankcase, propeller shaft, water pump body - against electrochemical corrosion caused by immersion in salt, brackish or fresh water with high conductivity. In Hamilton systems, the conical geometry of this TEN02525 anode allows precise adjustment to the specific anchor points of the propulsion assembly, guaranteeing stable electrical contact and a homogeneous sacrificial surface throughout the sailing season. Without effective cathodic protection, the structural components of the powertrain are exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise the integrity of the entire system.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction of its mass by more than 50%, at which point it stops offering effective cathodic protection; It is also indicative to find pitting or incipient corrosion on the adjacent metal surfaces of the propellant, indicating that the anode has been consumed earlier than expected. It is recommended to inspect and replace the sacrificial anodes at least once a season—or every time the boat is taken out of the water for maintenance—regardless of the number of hours of use, since their wear depends more on the immersion time and the aggressiveness of the water than on the engine hours. Renewing the anode preventively before launching is the most economical practice: the cost of this component is minimal compared to repairing pits in the propeller body or the drive shaft.
