Description

Function and Technical Context

The fuel pump 438556 / REC1399-07352 is the component responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the carburetor in outboard engines of the Johnson and Evinrude groups, ensuring a constant flow free from interruptions throughout navigation. It operates within the fuel supply system, generally working by vacuum from the pulse of the two-stroke engine crankcase, which makes it dependent on the tightness of internal membranes. A failure in this pump causes poor carburation, progressive loss of power, unexpected engine shutdowns or inability to start, situations especially critical in offshore navigation or in hard-to-reach areas. Its replacement is one of the most common maintenance interventions in mid-range outboards from the 1980s and 1990s manufactured under the OMC brands. This reference is also interchangeable with Mercury/Mariner/Mercruiser references 878870, 8M0175313 and 8M6010288, as well as with OMC references 0388268, 0395713 and 0438556, which considerably expands its application in the workshop.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a worn fuel pump in outboards are: irregular idle or engine stalling under load, difficulty starting when hot, erratic fuel consumption or presence of moisture and visible cracks in the membrane when inspecting the pump. It is recommended to check the condition of the fuel pump at each seasonal maintenance, especially if the engine has been in service for several years or has remained inactive with fuel in the circuit, as neoprene membranes degrade with ethanol present in current gasoline. Replacing it preventively before the boating season avoids breakdowns in the water and significantly reduces the risk of requiring assistance afloat.
