Description

Function and technical context

The 8 mm fuel non-return valve acts as a unidirectional element within the supply circuit of the outboard or inboard engine, allowing fuel flow only in the correct direction towards the carburetor or injection rail. Its main mission is to prevent fuel from returning to the tank or to the priming pump, ensuring that the system maintains residual pressure once the engine is stopped and facilitating starting. When this component fails – whether due to deformation of the closing disc, varnish accumulation or simple aging of the elastomer – the fuel line loses unidirectional tightness: the engine has cold starting difficulties, jerks at half acceleration or even sudden stops due to fuel shortage. Since it works in continuous contact with petrol or diesel, the chemical resistance of the sealing material is decisive for its durability.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged fuel non-return valve are: difficult or slow starting after periods of rest (the engine needs to be primed several times before starting), loss of pressure in the line detected during diagnosis with a pressure gauge, and a persistent smell of fuel in the bilge due to microleaks in the opposite direction. It is recommended to inspect this element during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively if it exceeds 300-400 hours of operation or shows any signs of rigidity, cracks or discoloration on the body. Changing the non-return valve preventively is a minimal investment compared to the cost of assistance at sea due to fuel supply failure.
