Function and technical context

The reverse gear is the gear responsible for reversing the direction of rotation of the propeller inside the outboard transmission box, making it possible to reverse the boat. It works in the transmission train housed in the tail of the engine, coupling to the propeller shaft through the gear selector mechanism when the helmsman activates the "rear" position. Without this component in perfect condition, the control of the vessel in docking, slipway or emergency maneuvers is compromised. A deteriorated pinion can lead to a total loss of the reverse gear, internal knocking in the gearbox and, if prolonged without attention, progressive damage to the drive pinion and the propeller shaft itself, turning a minor repair into a more expensive intervention.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of reverse gear wear are difficulty or inability to engage reverse, a rattling or clicking noise when selecting reverse gear, and an unusual vibration transmitted to the propeller shaft during reverse. In engines with intensive use or that operate in waters with high sediment content, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the transmission case sprockets at each seasonal maintenance or every 200-300 hours of operation. Acting at the first signs of wear on the flanks of the teeth prevents chain failures in the propulsion line that can leave the boat immobilized far from port.
