Description

Function and technical context

The complete sacrificial anode for outboard motor is the component responsible for protecting the metal parts of the engine against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that occurs when metals of different electrical potential coexist in a conductive medium such as seawater or brackish water. Being manufactured with an alloy with a lower electrochemical potential – usually zinc, aluminum or magnesium depending on the navigation environment – the anode corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the structural parts of the engine, such as the propeller, shaft, casing or exhaust manifold. The correct functioning of this cathodic protection system is essential to preserve the integrity of the lower block and other critical components of the propulsion group, especially in vessels that remain moored for long periods or that navigate in waters with high electrical conductivity. A depleted or missing anode can lead to severe and irreversible corrosion of high-cost components in a matter of a single season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs replacement is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point its protective capacity drops significantly; Visually, the anode will appear very reduced, irregular or with the surface completely corroded. It is recommended that the anodes be inspected and replaced at least once a season, or more frequently if the vessel operates in water with high salinity or is connected to shore power at the pontoon. Renewing the complete anode preventively before beaching the boat or at the beginning of each nautical campaign is the most effective measure to avoid costly repairs due to corrosion in the engine foot or transmission.
