Description

Function and technical context

The complete sacrificial anode for Scania marine engines is the component responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the engine and transmission against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in both saltwater and freshwater marine environments. It acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair, consuming in a controlled manner to preserve noble metals such as bronze, aluminum or stainless steel present in the drive unit. Being a complete assembly, this anode guarantees full coverage of the cathodic protection system, preventing electrolysis from attacking critical surfaces such as the tail shaft, propeller, engine support or transmission body. Its correct operation is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the propulsion train and avoid costly repairs due to severe corrosion.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at a minimum at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost between 30 and 50% of their mass, since below that volume they no longer offer effective cathodic protection. The clearest symptoms that the anode is depleted or missing are the appearance of pitting and reddish or whitish corrosion on submerged metal surfaces, premature deterioration of the propeller or visible wear on the tail shaft. It is recommended to replace the entire assembly preventively at each annual grounding: the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to an axle or transmission repair due to advanced corrosion.
