Function and technical context
The TEN02000 cooling anode is a cathodic protection element integrated into the cooling circuit of the G.M. marine petrol engine. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the engine block, cooling ducts and heat exchangers in contact with sea or brackish water. Working within the cooling system, this anode protects critical components such as cylinder liners, water caps and water-cooled exhaust manifolds, whose corrosion can compromise engine tightness and lead to high-cost breakdowns. Without anodic protection in good condition, electrolysis progressively degrades the base metal until causing internal or external water leaks in the circuit.
When to replace this part?
The cooling anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass or when whitish deposits or calcareous crust appear indicating loss of electrochemical activity. A clear symptom that the anode has stopped working correctly is the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on internal metal surfaces of the cooling system, greenish stains around water circuit connections or, in advanced cases, small leaks in gaskets and bleed plugs. Preventive replacement at least once a year, especially in boats that sail in salty or brackish waters, avoids structural damage to the engine block that can involve repairs costing thousands of euros in the workshop.
