ONAN ANODE

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes constitute the central element of cathodic protection systems in marine engines and nautical generators such as those in the Onan range. Their mission is to concentrate on themselves the galvanic corrosion process that would otherwise attack the noble metal surfaces of the engine: aluminum blocks, transmission casings, bronze impellers or exhaust elbows. The TEN02033 anode is installed directly at the points of greatest electrochemical exposure of the engine group, acting as a negative electrode that is consumed in a controlled manner before corrosion reaches structural components. Without effective cathodic protection, salt or brackish water silently and irreversibly accelerates the internal degradation of the engine, causing pitting, leaks and breakdowns with high repair costs.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. In boats that navigate in salt or brackish waters, the inspection is recommended at the beginning and at the end of each nautical season, regardless of the accumulated hours of use; In areas of high electrical conductivity of water, wear can be significantly faster. Replacing the anode preventively, before it is completely consumed, is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to critical components of the Onan engine that can involve repairs of several thousand euros.
