Description

Function and technical context

This VM motor anode with a diameter of 14 mm and a length of 20 mm acts as sacrificial cathodic protection on the block or casing of the outboard or inboard motor, neutralizing the galvanic corrosion that salt, brackish or mineral water generates on the critical metal parts of the propeller. It works within the cooling system and the metal structure submerged or in contact with water, interposing its zinc mass between the marine electrolyte and the aluminum or cast iron components of the engine. Its function is to degrade in a controlled manner instead of the noble metals of the block, cylinder head, water pump or transmission housing, prolonging the useful life of components that are considerably more expensive to replace. When the anode is depleted or absent, galvanic corrosion advances unchecked and can compromise the tightness of the cooling circuit or the structural integrity of the engine.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced as soon as they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have an uneven surface, or have eroded flat and without effective sacrificial material; Waiting for its total exhaustion leaves the engine completely unprotected against electrolysis. In boats that navigate in salt waters with high conductivity or that remain moored for months, it is recommended to check them every 150-200 hours of operation or before each winter. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid corrosion damage to cast or aluminum parts that can render the engine unusable.
