LOMBARDINI SAILDRIVE SLDM ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The Lombardini SLDM saildrive sacrificial anode is the galvanic component responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the saildrive against electrolytic corrosion. Made of high-purity zinc alloy, it acts as a consumable element that oxidizes preferentially before the structural surfaces of the saildrive, preserving the integrity of the shaft, casing and internal parts of the transmission system. Without correct cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly attack the metal components of the saildrive, causing water leaks into the hull, damage to seals and bearings, and even structural failure of the transmission assembly. Its correct installation is critical in sailing boats with an engine integrated under the hull, where the saildrive is permanently in contact with the sea water.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed between 50% and 70% of its volume it no longer offers effective protection. Unlike other components, the zinc anode does not fail suddenly, but rather depletes progressively, so visual inspection at each beaching or at least once a season is essential. The professional recommendation is to replace it preventively at each annual stranding, regardless of its apparent condition, since maintaining the saildrive without sufficient cathodic protection can lead to very high-cost repairs or the complete replacement of the transmission group.
