Description

Function and technical context

The Caterpillar 2288 anode plug (ref. TEN02024TP) is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed in the bleed points or plugs of the engine block and cooling circuit of Caterpillar marine engines. Its function is to act as a localized sacrificial anode: being made from an alloy that is more electrochemically active than the aluminum or cast iron of the block, it attracts galvanic corrosion and degrades instead of the metal surfaces of the engine. This component works directly in the seawater cooling system, where the presence of dissolved electrolytes and the potential difference between different metals generate accelerated corrosion. Without adequate cathodic protection at these points, the internal walls of the block, cooling passages and drain plugs can suffer pitting and punctures resulting in coolant leaks, engine overheating or water entering the lubrication circuit.

When to replace this part?

Plug anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they are worn by more than 50% of their mass or when signs of unusual corrosion appear on adjacent metal areas of the block, indicating that the anode has exhausted its sacrificial capacity. In vessels that operate in waters with high salinity or in ports with high galvanic current (due to proximity to other vessels or electrical installations), the replacement interval can be reduced to a single season or even less. Replacing this anode plug preventively is the most economical measure to avoid structural damage to the Caterpillar block, the repair of which can involve costs much higher than a simple maintenance replacement.
