Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key element of the cathodic protection system in outboard motors and marine propellers: they corrode in a controlled manner to preserve the noble metal parts of the engine - such as propellers, shafts, casings and gaskets - against the electrochemical attack of salt or brackish water. This zinc or alloy anode acts as a galvanic negative pole, attracting corrosion to itself and away from more expensive structural components. Its correct operation is especially critical in boats that remain in the water continuously, where galvanic corrosion can compromise the integrity of the engine in a single season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that an anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost more than 50% of its volume it must be replaced immediately, as it no longer offers effective protection. It is recommended to inspect the anodes during each seasonal maintenance - at least once a year or before launching the boat - and replace them preventively even if they are not completely consumed if corrosion is seen on adjacent metal parts. Replacing the anode in time is the most economical intervention to avoid serious damage to the propulsion group that requires high-cost repairs at the dock.
