Description

Function and technical context

This plug anode for Cummins marine engines acts as a cathodic protection element, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the metallic components of the block and the cooling circuit against galvanic corrosion. When in contact with sea or brackish water circulating through the internal cooling system, the anode absorbs galvanic currents that would otherwise attack the aluminum, cast iron or bronze surfaces of the motor. Its plug format facilitates installation in the access holes to the cooling circuit, being a compact and effective solution to protect internal areas of the engine that the external anode cannot reach. If this component is completely depleted without being replaced, the engine's internal metal surfaces are exposed to accelerated corrosion, which can lead to pitting, coolant leaks, and serious structural damage to the block.

When to replace this part?

Plug anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. A clear sign that the anode has stopped protecting the engine is the appearance of whitish or reddish deposits in the cooling galleries, or the detection of pitting on internal metal surfaces during a maintenance check. Its preventive replacement is recommended in each annual seasonal maintenance, especially in vessels that navigate in salt or brackish waters, where electrochemical activity is significantly higher.
