Function and technical context

The Castoldi TEN02400 sacrificial anode is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a consumable element that attracts electrochemical corrosion and preserves the noble metal surfaces of the propeller and transmission. Its function is to rust in a controlled manner before more expensive components such as the rotor, the nozzle body or the shaft of the Castoldi jet drive do so, avoiding the galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals are in contact with seawater. Without adequate cathodic protection, the structural components of the propeller are exposed to electrochemical attack by salt or brackish water, which can lead to pitting, structural weakening and serious breakdowns that require the vessel to be beached for high-cost repairs. This type of anode is designed specifically for Castoldi jet propulsion systems, guaranteeing a geometry and alloy composition adapted to the critical points of that propulsion assembly.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest warning sign is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed 50% to 60% of its initial volume, it must be replaced before it is depleted and leaves the propellant components unprotected. In saltwater or high-conductivity environments, wear can occur in a single boating season, so annual inspection and replacement—coinciding with seasonal tune-up or winter laying—is the standard practice recommended by marine mechanics shops. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention available to prevent corrosion of the Castoldi jet drive: the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing the rotor or propeller casing.
