BUKH ANODE W/PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The Bukh engine plugged sacrificial anode is an essential cathodic protection component in salt and brackish water marine installations. Its mission is to oxidize in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the engine and transmission against galvanic corrosion, acting as a sacrificial element that absorbs the electrochemical attack. The incorporation of the plug in this model facilitates its installation and guarantees a correct seal at the fixing point, preventing water infiltration into the block or casing. Without an anode in good condition, the structural metals of the engine – casing, shaft, propeller, exchangers – are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the integrity of the assembly and generate serious and irreparable breakdowns.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs replacement is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, visible deformation, surface disintegration or intense whitish discoloration indicating that the sacrificial material has been used up. Zinc or aluminum anodes used in Bukh engines should be inspected at least once a season and replaced preventively when material loss exceeds that threshold, without waiting for complete exhaustion. Renewing the anode at each annual maintenance is the most recommended professional practice: the cost of the part is minimal compared to an out-of-port corrosion repair on the shaft or engine block.
