The most common symptoms of piston ring wear include unusually high oil consumption, bluish smoke from the exhaust (indicative of lubricant combustion), loss of compression measurable in the cylinder test, and reduced available thrust at full load. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the rings during each rectification or major overhaul of the engine, especially after exceeding a high number of hours of navigation or after an episode of propeller overheating.
