Function and technical context

The 10 micron filter element is part of the in-line fuel filtration system before the diesel or petrol reaches the injection pump or carburetor. Acting within the group of Racor type separator filters, its mission is to capture solid particles, emulsified water and microscopic contaminants that circulate in the fluid, thus protecting the injectors, needle valves and the most sensitive precision elements of the feeding circuit. A clogged or damaged element reduces the flow to the engine, causes pressure drops in the fuel line and can cause supply cuts, loss of power or unexpected stops of the propeller while sailing. Keeping it in perfect condition is, therefore, a direct measure to protect the marine engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of an exhausted filter element are the progressive loss of revolutions at full load, jerks or irregularities at idle and the fuel restriction warning light coming on when the filter includes a vacuum gauge. As a general rule, separator filter manufacturers recommend checking the element during each seasonal maintenance and replacing it every 200-300 hours of operation or, at least, once a year, bringing the change forward if you have navigated with fuel of questionable quality or after water has entered the tank. Replacing the element preventively before going out to sea is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid a breakdown in the power system far from port.
