Description

Function and technical context

The Champion RS15LYC spark plug is the ignition element responsible for generating the spark that initiates combustion in the cylinder of the marine engine. It works within the ignition system—whether by magneto or coil—and its correct operation directly determines the quality of combustion, fuel consumption and the power delivered to the propulsion shaft. The nickel electrode and the high-density ceramic insulator that this reference incorporates are designed to resist humidity, environmental salinity and the extreme thermal cycles typical of the marine environment. If the spark plug fails or degrades, the engine can experience misfires, irregular vibrations and a progressive loss of performance that compromises navigation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a marine spark plug in poor condition are: difficult or impossible starting when cold, jerking and loss of speed during navigation, increased fuel consumption and visible carbon deposits or erosion on the electrode when inspected. As a general rule, it is recommended to check the spark plugs during each seasonal maintenance and replace them at the interval indicated by the engine manufacturer, usually between 100 and 200 hours of operation. Changing the spark plugs preventively is one of the lowest cost interventions that prevents breakdowns at sea and ensures reliable ignition on every outing.
