CHAMPION RN11YC4 SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The Champion RN11YC4 spark plug is part of the ignition system of small displacement outboard engines, being responsible for generating the electric spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. It works under high voltage and temperature cycles, and its condition directly affects combustion efficiency and the response of the engine at full load. A bad spark plug causes difficult starts, loss of power, irregular fuel consumption and, in serious cases, misfires that can render the engine unusable while sailing. Champion reference RN11YC4 is a standard thread spark plug widely used in 5 hp outboard engines, known for its reliability in marine use conditions.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in an outboard are: difficulty or inability to start, jerks or irregularities in idling, noticeable loss of thrust, and bluish or black smoke from the exhaust. In marine engines, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plug during each seasonal maintenance or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first, since humidity and salt accelerate the deterioration of the electrode and insulator. Changing the spark plug preventively is one of the most economical interventions and avoids being immobilized in the water due to an avoidable misfire.
