Function and technical context
The Champion RL86C spark plug is part of the engine's ignition system, being directly responsible for generating the electric arc that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber in each work cycle. Its design is aimed at providing a stable and consistent spark under variable load and speed conditions, something especially demanding in small and medium displacement outboard engines and marine propellers that operate in environments of high humidity and saline corrosion. Poor ignition due to a bad spark plug causes ignition failures, loss of power, increased fuel consumption and can lead to damage to the injection system or the catalyst if the engine has one. The correct specification of the spark plug – thermal grade, type of electrode and internal resistance – is decisive for the reliability of the engine in navigation.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate that the spark plug requires replacement are: difficult or irregular starting, jerks during acceleration, abnormal vibrations at idle and a visible increase in fuel consumption. In marine engines, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every sailing season or approximately every 100 hours of operation, since exposure to saline humidity and thermal cycles accelerate electrode wear and deterioration of the insulator. Changing spark plugs preventively at the beginning of the season is a common practice among nautical mechanics, since its reduced cost prevents unforeseen stops in the water that could lead to towing or more costly breakdowns.
