CHAMPION L90C SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The L90C spark plug works at the heart of the marine petrol engine's ignition system: its mission is to generate the high-voltage electrical discharge that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, cycle after cycle, over thousands of revolutions. Continuously subjected to extreme temperatures and pressures, the integrity of the central electrode, the ground electrode and the ceramic insulator is decisive for complete and efficient combustion. Its design is specifically designed to resist the accelerated corrosion typical of marine environments - salt water, high humidity and condensation - factors that degrade conventional spark plugs much faster than in land applications. When the spark plug loses spark capacity or presents compression leaks due to deterioration of the seal, the engine suffers from ignition failures, increased consumption and risk of damage to pistons and valves due to incomplete combustion.
When to replace this part?
The clearest signs that a marine spark plug needs replacement are expensive or impossible cold starting, unstable idling with noticeable vibrations in the hull, jerks and dips in speed under load, and appreciable increase in petrol consumption with no apparent cause in the engine or propeller. On frequently used petrol outboard and inboard engines, the common practice among marine mechanics is to check and replace the spark plugs at each seasonal maintenance or, at most, every 100 hours of operation, in anticipation of electrode erosion and the buildup of carbon deposits. Changing the spark plug preventively before the season begins is the most cost-effective decision: the cost of the part is insignificant compared to an ignition failure at sea or the secondary damage that a poor ignition sustained over time can cause.
