CHAMPION D16 SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The spark plug is the final component of the ignition system in outboard petrol engines: it generates the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber in each engine cycle. A bad spark plug causes incomplete or irregular combustion, which directly translates into loss of power, increased fuel consumption and starting difficulties. The Champion D16 reference is designed to maintain the appropriate thermal window in small and medium displacement outboard engines, guaranteeing a reliable spark even in humid and salty conditions typical of the marine environment.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or defective spark plug in an outboard engine include difficult or failed starting when cold, jerking and rough idling, noticeable loss of acceleration and, in advanced cases, abnormal vibrations due to misfire in one or more cylinders. As a preventive maintenance criterion, it is recommended that the spark plugs be inspected at each seasonal inspection and replaced approximately every 100 hours of operation or once a year, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plugs preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and avoids being left without propulsion at sea due to an easily avoidable misfire.
