Description
Function and technical context
The CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) with reference 0584823 is the module responsible for managing the capacitive discharge generated by the ignition spark in the 25 and 35 hp Johnson and Evinrude engines. Integrated into the electronic ignition system, it receives the signal from the stator and the pulse sensor to precisely calculate the exact moment of firing, guaranteeing efficient combustion in each engine cycle. A failure in this component causes irregular ignitions, severe loss of power or the complete inability to start, leaving the boat without propulsion. The reference 0584823 also has the updated substitute 0586472 (Power Pack), so both references are technically equivalent and interchangeable according to the BRP EPC catalogue.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a defective CDI include intermittent misfires under load, sudden jerks or cuts at medium-high rpm, an engine that starts when cold but fails when hot, and a complete absence of spark in one or more cylinders as verified with a strobe gun. Unlike mechanical components with fixed intervals, the CDI module does not have a predetermined hourly life, but should be inspected whenever symptoms of erratic ignition appear or when the diagnosis rules out coils, spark plugs and pickup. It is recommended to replace it preventively if there is any doubt during seasonal maintenance, since a failure in navigation can leave the boat without steering in open waters.
