Description

Function and technical context

The 2" brass thru-hull is a structural watertight accessory that allows the controlled passage of water - or its evacuation - through the hull of the boat, guaranteeing that the connection between the interior of the boat and the sea remains airtight under any navigation conditions. It is usually installed in deck drainage, bilge emptying and rainwater evacuation systems, acting as a scupper integrated into the hull. The brass alloy gives it high resistance to corrosion in marine environments, as well as mechanical robustness against the stresses inherent to the hull during navigation. A damaged thru-hull, with leaks in its threads or with a cracked body, can compromise the integrity of the boat and cause uncontrolled water inflows that put the boat and its crew at risk.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a thru-hull needs to be checked or replaced are: persistent moisture around the installation base, water oozing between the thru-hull body and the hull, visible corrosion in the threaded area or on the outer collar, and difficulty opening or closing the associated seacock. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls and their accessories during each seasonal maintenance, checking the tightness, the state of the sealant and the absence of cracks. Preventively replacing a thru-hull with signs of wear avoids emergency repairs in the dock and, above all, eliminates the risk of water entering during navigation.
