Function and technical context

This naval bronze 90º male/female elbow is a pipe fitting designed to change the direction of duct routing in onboard plumbing systems, seawater cooling circuits, bilge lines, wet exhaust systems or fuel installations on pleasure and work boats. Its 90º right-angled geometry allows the installation of pipes to be adapted to small spaces and the irregular geometry of the hull or engine room, facilitating changes in direction without the need to force the pipe or resort to long radius curves. The combination of male thread on one end and female thread on the other (BSP 2 inches) allows direct connection with other threaded accessories of the same family without the need for additional adapters. Naval bronze, a copper alloy specially formulated for marine environments, offers much higher corrosion resistance than conventional steels, making it the appropriate technical choice for both freshwater and saltwater circuits on board. When to replace this part?

Naval bronze elbows should be inspected at each seasonal maintenance, paying particular attention to the appearance of greenish or whitish stains around the threads, which indicate incipient galvanic or electrolytic corrosion, as well as any traces of moisture or lime deposits that indicate a microleak. In installations with seawater, the dezincification process can weaken the alloy progressively and not always visible from the outside, so it is recommended to replace the elbow if there is the slightest doubt about its structural integrity or if there are visible deformations in the body of the accessory. Replacing this type of fitting preventively during the annual stranding is much more economical than facing a breakdown due to breakage or leakage while sailing.
