BMW BAR ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The BMW bar anode is a cathodic protection element designed to safeguard the submerged metal parts of the boat against galvanic corrosion. It acts as a sacrificial metal, corroding instead of the most valuable structural or mechanical parts, such as the shaft, propeller, eyebolt or hull. This protection system is especially critical in salt or brackish water environments, where the difference in electrical potential between different metals significantly accelerates the degradation of components. Without effective anodic protection, bronze, aluminum or stainless steel parts can suffer pitting and material loss that compromises the structural integrity and safety of the vessel.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its initial volume, it must be replaced without delay, since its protective capacity is compromised. The inspection and replacement of the sacrificial anodes must be carried out at least once per nautical season, or sooner if the boat frequently sails in waters with high conductivity. Replacing the rod anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to much higher cost components, such as shafts or propellers.
