ANODO HELICE VETUS Ø53 (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
The Vetus Ø53 propeller anode in aluminum alloy acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, attracting galvanic corrosion to preserve the propeller and the metal components of the propulsion shaft. It works within the boat's propulsion system, installing directly on the 53 mm diameter propeller shaft or hub, creating an electrochemical barrier between noble metals and sea or brackish water. Without good anodic protection, the bronze or stainless steel propeller, shaft and bushings suffer accelerated corrosive attack that can render them completely unusable. Being made of aluminum, this anode is especially suitable for brackish and marine waters, offering effective protection in a wide range of salinities compared to classic zinc anodes.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom of exhaustion is the visible reduction in the volume of the anode: when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, it must be replaced before it stops protecting adjacent components; In extreme cases, corrosion pits may appear on the propeller or shaft as a sign that the protection has failed. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching, and replace it whenever it shows wear greater than 50% regardless of the time elapsed. Changing the anode preventively each season is the most economical measure to avoid replacing a propeller or propulsion shaft, repairs that cost much more.
