Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Varifold 4-blade propeller with Ø67 mm diameter acts as active cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of propulsion systems in boats that operate in both salt water and fresh water. Made from aluminum alloy (AL), it is designed specifically for Varifold 4-blade folding propellers, protecting them by electrochemically sacrificing before the noble metal of the propeller and hub suffers degradation. Its correct mounting to the propeller hub ensures that the surrounding metal propulsion components are under continuous cathodic protection throughout the sailing season. A depleted or missing anode directly exposes the propeller, shaft and nearby metal fittings to pitting and accelerated corrosion, with the consequent risk of vibrations, imbalance and costly structural failures.

When to replace this part?

Aluminum propeller anodes must be visually inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season: when the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass or has a completely irregular and corroded surface, it is essential to replace it before launching the boat again. In high salinity environments or on vessels with greater electrical activity on board (extensive electrical installations, marine with stray currents), wear can be significantly faster, so it is recommended to check the condition of the anode every 3-4 months of active use. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice by naval technicians: the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a Varifold propeller damaged by galvanic corrosion.
