Description

Function and technical context

The aluminum J-Prop propeller anode with a diameter of 60 mm acts as a galvanic sacrifice on the propeller shaft, protecting it against electrolytic corrosion caused by galvanic currents in the water. It works within the boat's transmission and propulsion system, installing directly on the propeller shaft to create a cathodic barrier that preserves the noble metals of the transmission. Being the most reactive element of the assembly, it is consumed before the stainless steel or bronze of the shaft and propeller, avoiding pitting and loss of section that would compromise the structural integrity of the propulsion line. The aluminum alloy makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where electrochemical activity is more aggressive and zinc anodes can become passivated.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptoms that the anode has completed its life cycle are the visible reduction of its mass by more than 50%, the appearance of pits or rust stains on the shaft or propeller hub, and an excessively porous or disintegrated texture on the anode itself. For this type of component, inspection is recommended at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, with annual replacement as a standard preventive rule, since prolonging its use beyond the recommended wear leaves the shaft unprotected. Changing the J-Prop anode before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid replacing the shaft or propeller, parts of much higher cost.
