Function and technical context

Quick's BTR185 sacrificial anode, made of zinc (ZN), is part of the boat's galvanic protection system and acts as an electrochemical barrier between submerged metal components and salt or brackish water. Its function is to sacrifice itself through preferential corrosion to protect propellers, shafts, horns, engine tails and other elements of the transmission and bodywork of the boat against galvanic attack. Zinc is the ideal material for use in salt water, where the potential difference between different metals generates eddy currents that, without protection, quickly degrade the structural components of the propulsion train. The absence or depletion of a zinc anode in these areas directly exposes pitting, erosion and structural failures in very high cost parts.

When to replace this part?

A zinc sacrificial anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or exhibits irregular deformation, obvious signs that galvanic protection is compromised. The inspection must be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the vessel, although in areas of high electrolyte activity or with erratic currents on the pontoon a semi-annual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the BTR185 anode preventively before it is completely exhausted is the most economical measure to avoid damage to propellers, shafts and other critical propulsion parts that would involve much higher cost repairs.
