The reinforced Ø 125 mm rudder disc anode acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the rudder, sternpost and structural metal elements of the boat's steering system. Made of zinc (ZN), it is especially suitable for use in salt and brackish waters, where electrochemical activity is more aggressive. Its reinforced design guarantees a greater active mass and a longer useful life compared to standard models, prolonging the interval between replacements and offering more robust protection in demanding navigation conditions. Proper installation of this disc anode on the rudder prevents accelerated electrolysis that can cause pitting, punctures and loss of structural integrity in adjacent metal parts, avoiding costly breakdowns and unforeseen groundings.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or have a very irregular and eroded surface, since below that point their protective capacity decreases drastically. A clear sign that the anode is exhausted—or that it was never properly installed—is the appearance of reddish corrosion or pitting on the metal surface of the rudder or the retaining bolts. Professional advice is to replace the anode preventively at each annual tune-up: the cost of an anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a rudder damaged by galvanic corrosion.
