Description

Function and technical context

The reinforced Ø 110 mm aluminum alloy rudder disc anode is part of the boat's passive cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial electrode in the rudder area. Its function is to become electrically polarized before the structural metals of the rudder—stainless steel, bronze or brass—so that galvanic corrosion is concentrated on it and not on the parts it protects. As it is a reinforced design, it offers greater active mass and an optimized geometry to anchor correctly on the rudder shaft or blade, guaranteeing continuous electrical contact even in demanding navigation conditions. The absence or depletion of this component exposes the rudder and its hardware to accelerated rust, compromising the maneuverability of the boat and leading to high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the rudder anode must be changed is a reduction in its section of more than 50% compared to the initial volume: when the disc appears clearly consumed, cracked or detached from the support, the cathodic protection is insufficient. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season—ideally at the annual beaching—and replace it preventively if wear exceeds that threshold, regardless of the time elapsed; In areas of high salinity or with high stray electrical currents, a semiannual review is advisable. Replacing the anode at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical practice to avoid rudder pitting and the costly welding or blade replacement work that comes with ignoring its deterioration.
