Description

Function and technical context

Rudder anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the metal surfaces of the rudder and blade, preventing galvanic corrosion that destroys the structural metal of the vessel. This pair of zinc anodes with a diameter of 90 mm is installed directly on the shaft or rudder stock, acting as a shield against eddy currents and accelerated oxidation processes that occur in marine environments, both in salt water and brackish water. Its correct installation guarantees the integrity of the rudder, an essential component of the boat's steering system: a corroded rudder can lose structural effectiveness, cause abnormal vibrations or, in extreme cases, compromise maneuverability during navigation. Zinc is the material of choice for navigation in salt and brackish water due to its ideal electrochemical potential compared to stainless steels, bronzes and naval aluminum alloys.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that rudder anodes need replacement is a visible reduction in mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its initial volume, it must be replaced before the metal clamp or steel core is exposed, at which point it no longer offers effective protection. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching and inspection of live works; In areas with high water conductivity or with sources of nearby eddy currents (marinas with poor electrical installations), it is advisable to check the condition of the anodes every six months. Changing the pair of rudder anodes preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid repairing or completely replacing the rudder, an incomparably higher cost.
