Description

Function and technical context

The aluminum alloy bolt teardrop anode acts as a sacrificial galvanic protector, absorbing electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the boat submerged in water: shafts, propellers, keels, rudders and metal hulls. It works within the cathodic protection system, establishing itself as the least noble metal in the electrical circuit formed between different metals in contact with the electrolyte (sea or brackish water). Its teardrop shape and bolt fixation guarantee secure installation and effective electrical contact, maximizing the sacrificial reaction surface. Without correct anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can destroy bronze or stainless steel propellers, shafts and accessories in just a few sailing seasons, generating serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

Aluminum sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or present an irregular, severely eroded surface or whitish deposits indicating exhaustion. A completely consumed anode leaves the noble metals of the boat unprotected, which manifests itself in visible pitting on submerged propellers, shafts or hardware. Nautical professionals recommend preventive replacement annually or sooner if navigation is intensive or in waters with high conductivity, thus avoiding structural damage that is difficult and expensive to repair outside the slipway.
