Description

Function and technical context

Teardrop-shaped sacrificial anodes for welding are part of the galvanic protection system for vessels, acting as sacrificial elements that preferentially corrode to preserve the metal surfaces of the hull, tail shaft, rudders and other submerged appendages. Made of aluminum alloy, this type of anode is especially suitable for use in salt water and brackish water, where the electrochemical activity is more aggressive. The teardrop geometry optimizes hydrodynamics, minimizing drag while the anode fulfills its protective function. If the cathodic protection system is left without active anodes, the noble metals of the hull and propulsion elements are exposed to accelerated galvanic corrosion, which can lead to serious structural damage and costly repairs in the dock.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the vessel, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have deep cracks or a surface layer of white rust indicating depletion of the active material. An unmistakable sign that the anodes have stopped protecting properly is the appearance of pitting or erosion in the base metal of adjacent appendages, such as the tail shaft or rudder fins. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season is the practice recommended by nautical maintenance professionals: the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to that of a hull repair or the replacement of a propulsion shaft damaged by electrolytic corrosion.
