Description

Function and technical context

The hanging anode is a cathodic protection element designed to be mounted directly on the transom or hull of the boat using a bracket or clamp, acting as a galvanic sacrifice to preserve submerged metal parts. Made of zinc, this type of anode is the standard solution for boats that navigate in salt or brackish water, where galvanic corrosion acts rapidly on propellers, shafts, horns, outboard motor anodes and other elements of the hull. The operating principle is based on the fact that zinc, being a less noble metal, corrodes preferentially, thus protecting the most expensive metal components of the boat. Its correct installation guarantees that the electrochemical potential of the system remains in balance, avoiding pitting and premature degradation of bronze alloys, stainless steel or marine aluminum.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptoms that the hanging anode has exhausted its useful life are the loss of visible mass greater than 50% of its volume, the presence of incipient corrosion on the shaft or propeller, or the characteristic whitish and cracked appearance of consumed zinc. The general rule in nautical maintenance is to inspect and, if necessary, replace the zinc anodes at the beginning of each navigation season or, at most, every year in boats that remain in the water continuously. Replacing the anode preventively, before the parts it protects deteriorate, is always more economical than repairing or replacing a corroded shaft or propeller.
