Description

Function and technical context

The 105 mm suspended zinc anodes are part of the vessel's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to prevent galvanic corrosion in the submerged metal parts of the hull, tailshaft, propeller and other structural components. As zinc is a more active metal than aluminum or stainless steel, this anode preferentially corrodes, preserving the integrity of the parts it protects. Its suspended format allows it to be installed in strategic areas of the hull or underwater structure where conventional protection with plate anodes does not reach with equal effectiveness. Without proper cathodic protection, submerged metal parts suffer accelerated electrolytic corrosion that can compromise the structural safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that volume they no longer offer effective protection. Signs that the anode is depleted or that cathodic protection is insufficient include the appearance of pitting or reddish spots on propellers, shafts and metal surfaces of the hull, as well as the visible and rapid deterioration of underwater aluminum components. It is recommended to replace the anodes preventively at the end of each season or after the annual beaching, without waiting for them to be completely consumed, to guarantee continued protection and avoid costly repairs in the shipyard.
