Description

Function and technical context

This bolt-on zinc anode acts as cathodic protection on the hull, submerged metal surfaces and propulsion system components, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking more noble metals such as aluminum or stainless steel. Being screwable, it is fixed directly on the surface to be protected using screws, guaranteeing continuous and reliable electrical contact even in demanding navigation conditions. Its dimensions of 205x65 mm make it a medium-high area protection anode, suitable for boat bottoms, rudders, propeller shafts or any submerged metal surface exposed to salt or brackish water. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion will begin to degrade structural and propulsion parts, with costly and potentially dangerous consequences for the integrity of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

A zinc anode should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, shows cracks, or has partially detached from its support. The most obvious sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the appearance of pitting or oxidation on the adjacent metal surfaces that it should be protecting. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively every season in salt water or every two seasons in fresh water, without waiting for it to be completely consumed, since an exhausted anode leaves the submerged metal components completely unprotected.
