ANODO PLACA SAIPEM 118X35 (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
The plate anode for Saipem units acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing the galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals coexist submerged in salt or brackish water. Made of aluminum alloy (AL), it offers especially effective protection in marine waters of medium-high salinity, where it outperforms zinc anodes. It is installed directly on the casing or structure of the Saipem unit—acting as a shield between the base metal of the equipment and the electrolytic medium—thus preserving the hull, shaft, propeller and other metal components from corrosion degradation. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion attacks the structural components of the propeller or hull, potentially causing serious and irreversible damage that requires expensive repair.
When to replace this anode?
The most obvious sign that the aluminum anode needs replacement is a reduction in mass of more than 50%, visually noticeable as an irregular geometry, very worn or with completely consumed areas. The inspection of the anodes must be carried out at least once a season - usually during the annual beaching - and whenever the boat has remained anchored for long periods in areas of high galvanic activity or contaminated waters. Replacing the anode preventively, before it is completely exhausted, is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid damage to more expensive parts such as shafts, propellers or metal casings.
