Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the primary shield against galvanic corrosion in outboard engines, inboard engines and submerged propulsion systems. This oval zinc anode acts as the preferred negative electrode: when in contact with salt or brackish water, it is electrochemically sacrificed, protecting the noble metals of the structure—aluminum, stainless steel and bronze—from differential corrosion. Zinc is the standard material for marine waters with medium-high salinity, where its electrochemical potential guarantees effective and stable protection throughout the season. Without a healthy anode, galvanic corrosion silently attacks the propeller, tailshaft, engine casing or metal fittings, causing costly and irreversible structural damage.

When to replace this anode?

The clearest sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost 50% to 60% of its volume, it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. It is also advisable to inspect it if incipient corrosion is detected on adjacent metal parts - pitting on the propeller, rust on the shaft or on the fixing jaw - as this indicates that the anode has been used up sooner than expected. The standard professional recommendation is to check and replace zinc anodes at the beginning of each boating season; On vessels that navigate in high salinity areas or that remain moored throughout the year, the inspection should be carried out every six months to avoid costly repairs when grounded.
