Function and technical context

The aluminum sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines. This element is installed in areas of the engine exposed to salt water or fresh water, where it acts by absorbing electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise attack the vital metal parts of the block, cylinder head and cooling systems. The anode progressively dissolves in place of the structural components, avoiding irreversible damage to the engine that would compromise its operation and durability. Its presence is especially vital in saltwater vessels, where galvanic corrosion is accelerated.

When to replace this part?

It is recommended to inspect the anode before each boating season and replace it when it shows visible wear greater than 50% of its mass, or annually in intensive use in salt water. Symptoms of a depleted anode include accelerated corrosion in adjacent components, rust stains on the engine block, and, in advanced cases, cavities in critical metal parts. Preventive replacement is an economical measure that avoids costly offshore engine block repairs.
