Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential cathodic protection component in outboard motors submerged in salt or brackish water. Made of aluminum, it acts as an electrochemical barrier that degrades preferentially before the metal parts of the engine, preventing galvanic corrosion on the block, cylinder head, impeller blades and other critical surfaces. This controlled anode oxidation process preserves the structural integrity of the engine and ensures long life without damage from marine corrosion.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the beginning and end of each navigation season, replacing it when it shows visible wear greater than 50% of its volume or when it shows accelerated erosion, indicative of highly corrosive environments. Preventive replacement before each intensive sailing season is the best practice to prevent the engine from being left unprotected against marine corrosion, especially in waters with high saline content or at long moorings. A worn or missing anode exposes the engine to accelerated oxidation, which can compromise the tightness and operation of critical internal components.
