Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha and Mariner marine engines. Its main function is to preferentially oxidize in the face of galvanic corrosion that occurs in the saline environment, preventing rust and corrosion from being transferred to critical parts of the engine such as the cylinder block, cylinder head or cooling ducts. Installed in the fresh water chamber or at strategic points in the cooling circuit, it acts as a protective barrier against degradation caused by salinity and dissolved minerals. Without this anode, galvanic corrosion would advance rapidly in submerged areas, compromising the tightness, heat transfer and longevity of the motor.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be replaced when it shows significant visual erosion, reduction in size or partial disintegration after an active navigation season, especially in salt water or water with high mineral concentration. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once a season and replace it preventively every 12 months or after 200-250 hours of operation in intense use. Preventative replacement is essential to maintain the integrity of the cooling system and avoid costly repairs resulting from internal engine corrosion, water leaks or heat transmission failures.
