YAMAHA ANODE 66M-45371-00
Description
Function and technical context
The anode is a sacrificial component that protects the metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion caused by salt or brackish water. Installed in the engine block and cooling systems, it acts as an electrochemical barrier, absorbing oxidation that would otherwise attack the cast iron, aluminum and steel of the Yamaha engine. Its progressive degradation is intentional: the anode material is consumed to preserve the structural integrity of the engine, avoiding water leaks, weakening of cylinder heads and internal deterioration that would compromise the operation of the cooling system.
When to replace this part?
After each sailing season, especially in salt water, the anode will have lost a significant part of its mass due to controlled electrochemical wear. If upon inspection you notice that it is reduced to less than 50% of its size, has deep cracks or fragments come off, the engine protection is compromised and replacement is urgent to avoid serious internal corrosion. The professional recommendation is to replace it every year or every 100-150 hours of operation in saltwater, or immediately if you boat in estuaries and transitional waters where galvanic corrosion is accelerated.
