Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Yamaha engines from 6 to 9.9 hp is a cathodic protection component installed in the freshwater chamber or in areas exposed to contact with salt water of the engine. Its function is to oxidize preferably before the noble metal parts of the engine block, avoiding galvanic corrosion that deteriorates cylinders, cylinder heads and internal pipes. This protection system is essential on vessels operating in contaminated seawater or freshwater, where electrolysis accelerates the degradation of aluminum and iron. Without an anode in good condition, the engine suffers from internal pitting, coolant leaks and progressive loss of tightness in the water jacket.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at the beginning of each boating season and replaced when it shows visible erosion greater than 50% of its volume or when corrosion is detected in adjacent engine parts. In saltwater boats, annual replacement is recommended as a preventive measure; In fresh water, semiannual inspection is sufficient if the anode shows slow wear. Changing the anode preventively is a minimal investment that avoids costly cylinder and head repairs that can render the engine unusable for weeks.
