YAMAHA ANODE 6G1-45251-02
Description
Function and technical context
The anode is a sacrificial component integrated into the cathodic protection system of outboard motors. Its main function is to preferentially rust rather than the metal of the cylinder head, block and internal engine components, preventing galvanic corrosion caused by continuous contact with salt or brackish water. It works in the engine cooling circuit, directly exposed to the flow of water entering through the cooling intake. Without this anode in optimal conditions, corrosion would advance rapidly on the critical metal surfaces of the engine, compromising tightness, causing coolant leaks, water entry into cylinders and structural deterioration that would end in catastrophic failure.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season or after 50-100 hours of saltwater operation; If it presents advanced corrosion, loss of visible material or is practically consumed, it requires immediate replacement. Indirect symptoms of a depleted anode include rust deposits in the cooling circuit, variations in engine temperature or reduced cooling water flow. Performing the change preventively before the boating season is the most recommended practice, as it avoids surprises in the water and guarantees maximum engine durability in corrosive environments.
