Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of marine propulsion engines. Made of a special alloy, it acts as a preventive barrier against galvanic corrosion that occurs when the metal of the engine comes into contact with salt or brackish water. Its function is to oxidize preferably before the structural components of the engine, preventing critical parts such as the engine block, cylinder head and internal cooling systems from corroding. Without an anode in good condition, seawater directly attacks the aluminum and other metals of the engine, compromising its tightness, facilitating microleaks and accelerating internal deterioration.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the end of each navigation season and replaced when it shows visible erosion of 50% of its volume or when it is completely consumed. Activity in brackish waters, port areas or sandy bottoms accelerates wear, making it advisable to check the part every 100-150 hours of operation in these environments. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of the campaign is the most recommended practice to prevent galvanic corrosion from irreparably damaging the engine at sea.
