Function and technical context

The rudder anode is a cathodic sacrificial component that protects the submerged metal structures of the outboard motor against galvanic and electrolytic corrosion. Installed directly on the rudder, it acts as a reactive barrier in the anti-corrosion protection system, being the most vulnerable point exposed to salt water and electrochemical reactions that degrade metals such as aluminum and steel. Its accelerated deterioration prevents other critical parts of the engine - casing, propeller, fixings - from suffering structural corrosion, avoiding water leaks, loss of tightness and premature failures in higher-cost components.

When to replace this part?

The rudder anode must be inspected at the end of each sailing season: if it shows erosion greater than 50% of its volume or visible signs of deep corrosion in the base metal of the rudder, replacement is a priority. Annual preventive replacement is recommended in salt water or after 200-300 hours of operation, especially if white spots or calcareous deposits are detected around the fixation area. Replacing the anode preventively is much more economical than repairing or replacing a corroded rudder, which can compromise the maneuverability and seaworthiness of the boat.
