The aluminum anode is a passive cathodic protection component that is installed in the fresh water chamber of the outboard motor, specifically within the cooling circuit. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically, preferably oxidizing before the critical metal parts of the engine (cylinder head, cylinder block, heat exchanger), thus avoiding galvanic corrosion caused by the electrical conduction of the cooling water. On boats sailing in salt water or highly corrosive environments, this anode acts as an invisible barrier that preserves the structural integrity of the entire cooling system, preventing leaks, loss of tightness and serious breakdowns that would compromise navigation.

When to replace this part?

The aluminum anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season; If it presents visible erosion, deep pits or has lost more than 50% of its mass, it requires immediate replacement. An annual preventive change is recommended in saltwater or intensive use boats, and every two years in fresh water with moderate navigation.
